چکیده

The transcapillary fluid movement, induced by drinking a large amount of water, is known to lead to an increase in the extravascular fluid volume of tissues such as the muscle and the skin". The mechanism underlying this phenomenon, however, is poorly understood. The purpose of the present study was to know the nature and strength of the driving f orce which operates in such a fluid movement. The rate of capillary filtration was measured in the human calf by means of a pressure plethysmograph2),3),4), and the capillary filtration coefficient (CFC) and the effective filtration pressure were estimated.

An examination of transcapillary water flux in renal inner medulla.

We recently demonstrated that net fluid uptake occurs in the capillary system of the inner medulla. To define the site of fluid uptake, the concentration of protein was determined in plasma from descending vasa recta at the base and tip of the exposed papilla in Munich-Wister rats. The vasa recta plasma-to-arterial plasma protein concentration ratio (VR/P) was 1.43 +/- 0.09 at the base and 1.66...

Correlation between Ultrafiltration Coefficient and Effective Lymphatic Absorption Rate in Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis Patients: A Possible Paradigm Shift

Background: The relative contribution of transcapillary water movement and lymphatic reabsorption in peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a critical issue, particularly in patients with ultrafiltration failure (UFF). Based on routine results obtained from the PD Adequest 2.0 software, the present study aimed to re-evaluate the separate effects of transcapillary water movement and lymphatic reabsorption ...

Body fluid dynamics: back to the future.

Pioneering investigations conducted over a half century ago on tonicity, transcapillary fluid exchange, and the distribution of water and solute serve as a foundation for understanding the physiology of body fluid spaces. With passage of time, however, some of these concepts have lost their connectivity to more contemporary information. Here we examine the physical forces determining the compar...

Gastric emptying and intestinal absorption of ingested water and saline by hypovolemic rats.

Recent experiments showed that in a one-bottle test conducted 16h after sc injection of polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution, hypovolemic rats consumed water or 0.30 M NaCl in an initial drinking episode but did not empty the ingested fluid from the stomach or absorb it from the small intestine very rapidly, certainly not as rapidly as when 0.15M NaCl was consumed (Smith et al., Am J Physiol 292:...
